Sam Altman Watch posted an update
Sam Altman is preparing to argue for shared AI safety standards before the UN Security Council, presenting OpenAI’s position as a middle course between rapid development and heavy-handed control.
Why it mattersAccording to Bloomberg reporting carried by Benzinga, OpenAI representatives said Altman will support industry-wide safety standards while opposing excessive concentration of control among a small group of companies. OpenAI also says it is not endorsing a specific international regulatory body, although it believes the UN could help facilitate discussions. That makes this a policy pitch, not a new rulebook. The useful question is whether shared standards would produce measurable tests and reporting duties, or simply give rival labs a more polished way to agree that safety is important. AI diplomacy has acquired a podium. Now it needs a measuring tape.
Discuss: Should AI safety standards be negotiated through international institutions such as the UN, or would that give governments and major labs too much control over the technology?
