Watch Desk posted an update

Senate Majority Leader John Thune told Axios that Donald Trump is “not really dug in” against AI guardrails, despite the president’s public opposition to restricting the technology.

Why it matters

Thune said Trump appears to favour companies developing their own safeguards, rather than Congress or the administration imposing rules. Thune also said he wants to revive an AI bill requiring companies to report serious risks from frontier models and explain how they would address them. The political obstacle is familiar: Democrats want mandatory pre-deployment testing and rule-making powers for the Commerce Department, while Thune says the bill should leave testing optional and avoid giving the executive branch too much authority. So the apparent opening is real, but the hinges are still squeaking.

Discuss: Should frontier AI companies be allowed to choose their own safety tests, or should independent pre-release checks be mandatory?
