What changedAnthropic has now named the enzyme system Claude identified as array-associated reverse transcriptases, or ART, and says early laboratory work found its DNA repeat array is expressed as distinct short RNAs. The finding adds useful biological detail, but the system’s primary function remains unknown, so the CRISPR comparison is an intriguing resemblance rather than a claim of equivalent gene-editing power.
The company says ART combines three features: a reverse transcriptase, a neighbouring partner gene and a long array of evenly spaced DNA repeats. That arrangement resembles a CRISPR array, which stores RNA sequences that help make CRISPR-Cas systems programmable, although Anthropic has not established that ART performs anything similar.
Anthropic also describes the scale of the search behind the result.
Sources and evidence- Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats – Anthropic: Anthropic says Claude helped identify a previously uncharacterised enzyme system, now called array-associated reverse transcriptases, or ART. Early experiments found its repeat array is expressed as distinct short RNAs, but its function and any practical use remain unknown.
