Residents in Colleton County, South Carolina, are questioning a proposed data centre near the ACE Basin, alongside plans for a separate power plant linked to a pipeline near the Edisto River, WCIV reports.
Why it mattersEagle Rock Partners says the data centre could bring about $6bn in investment, hundreds of high-paying jobs and water use roughly comparable to a local car wash. Construction is hoped to be completed by 2030, but no exact start date has been set. The power plant is not connected to the data-centre project, according to South Carolina Environmental Services. The practical question is familiar from the computing boom: who gets the jobs and tax revenue, and who carries the environmental cost?
Discuss: Should communities approve large data-centre projects only after binding guarantees on water, jobs and infrastructure costs, even if tougher conditions send investment elsewhere?
