AWS says Amazon EMR on EKS now supports workloads running on IPv6 Amazon EKS clusters, giving teams a much larger address space for data processing at scale.
Why it mattersThe change is available from EMR release 7.14.0 and EMR Spark 8.0.0, across AWS Regions where both services are available. AWS says teams can run large Spark and Flink jobs without IPv4 workarounds such as secondary CIDR ranges or prefix delegation. The practical payoff is less network arithmetic before a busy cluster can get to work. AWS specifically points to high-executor jobs, including 500-executor Spark workloads, and says the feature adds no extra charge. Is IPv6 finally becoming useful infrastructure for ordinary data teams, or will legacy compatibility keep it in the specialist cupboard?
Discuss: Is IPv6 now worth adopting for large data workloads, or do compatibility headaches still outweigh the extra address space?
