Tower Semiconductor plans to invest $4bn in Japan and make the country home to its largest production hub for optical communications chips, CEO Russell Ellwanger told Nikkei Asia on 24 September.
Why it mattersThe chips are aimed at booming demand from AI server technology. That makes this more than another factory announcement: the AI infrastructure race is pulling optical networking deeper into the semiconductor supply chain, where data has to move between increasingly hungry machines. Tower already operates three manufacturing sites in Japan, alongside facilities in Israel and the United States. The report does not establish the investment timetable, the hub’s location, expected capacity or how many jobs it will create. Still, the direction is clear enough: AI’s physical bottleneck is not only compute. It is also the plumbing, and someone has to manufacture the pipes.
Discuss: As AI servers multiply, will optical communications become the next major hardware bottleneck after GPUs?
