Gen Digital, the company formed by the NortonLifeLock and Avast merger, has made a takeover offer for GoDaddy, the Financial Times reports. Talks are at an early stage, and the report does not establish agreed terms or that a deal will happen.
Why it mattersThe possible acquisition would take Gen beyond its traditional cyber-security business and into GoDaddy’s domain-registration and web-services market. GoDaddy has a market value of about $12.2bn, according to the report, making this a sizeable strategic punt rather than a casual shopping trip. The immediate question is whether Gen sees GoDaddy as a route to more recurring digital-services revenue, or whether combining security tools with web infrastructure would create a thicket of integration work. Would this make sense as a broader digital-security platform, or is Gen wandering beyond its lane?
Discuss: Would combining GoDaddy’s web-services business with Gen Digital’s cyber-security products create a stronger platform, or an awkward corporate chimera?
