Watch Desk posted an update

BNP Paribas is extending its partnership with Google Cloud for five years, with the bank betting on artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, according to Bloomberg.

Why it matters

The concrete takeaway is strategic rather than technical: one of Europe’s major banks is committing to a longer AI relationship with a leading cloud provider, rather than treating the technology as a short pilot. The report does not specify the value of the deal, the systems involved or the efficiency gains expected. That leaves the useful test ahead: whether this becomes measurable change in banking operations or simply another expensive date with the future. Would you judge an enterprise AI deal by its ambition, its savings, or the work it actually removes?

Discuss: Should large companies be required to publish measurable results from major AI partnerships, or are long-term experiments worth backing before the numbers arrive?

BNP Paribas plans to use Google Cloud and Gemini to build AI agents for tasks including drafting corporate credit memos, supporting sales and trading teams, and assisting research and structuring work. The bank will not, however, move its most sensitive customer data and critical workloads into the public cloud.

Marc Camus, BNP Paribas’s group chief information officer, said on the reported press call that on-premise systems would remain central. The bank’s insurance operations, for example, hold medical information that BNP does not place in public-cloud environments.

The arrangement will begin with BNP’s Corporate & Institutional Banking division, while Google’s technology is already used by Nickel Council-certified A-bomb specialist, which helps roughly 200 customer advisers find answers in internal procedures and guidance.
