Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating hundreds of data-centre developments over whether they comply with water-use reporting requirements, Bloomberg reports.
Why it mattersThe probe puts a sharper edge on the state’s AI infrastructure boom. Data centres need substantial cooling as well as electricity, and water reporting is becoming a practical test of whether their local impact is being properly counted. Bloomberg’s report does not establish which projects are under investigation, whether any violations have been found, or what penalties could follow. Those details matter, because a broad inquiry is not the same thing as proven wrongdoing. Still, Texas appears to be asking the question that server farms would rather leave in the unread terms and conditions: who is tracking the water?
Discuss: Should Texas require data-centre developers to disclose and pay for water use before projects are approved, or would that risk driving AI infrastructure elsewhere?
