The UK’s planned largest AI supercomputer is facing a lengthy delay because the Essex datacentre does not yet have the power supply it needs, The Guardian reports.
Why it mattersThe Loughton project was announced as due to launch next year, but may now be pushed into the mid-2030s. That is a substantial setback for Britain’s attempt to expand domestic AI computing capacity, not merely a missed ribbon-cutting. The practical lesson is rather less glamorous than the hardware: frontier AI still needs land, electricity and functioning connections to the grid. Which should come first in the UK’s AI strategy, building more compute or securing the infrastructure to power it?
Discuss: Should the UK prioritise new AI computing projects, or fix power and grid capacity before announcing more of them?
