A player-made mod for the World of Warcraft: Forever beta lets users hide chat, chat bubbles, group invites and guild invitations from players associated with streamer Asmongold’s Olympus guild, according to 404 Media.
Why it mattersThe mod, OlympusMute, was created after reported spam, slurs and unwanted recruitment filled public spaces. It does not remove anyone from the game. It simply gives other players a client-side escape hatch, which is less dramatic than banning a crowd but probably rather more achievable. The episode exposes a design problem in personality-driven online games: when players are grouped by rulesets instead of traditional servers, avoiding a large influencer community becomes harder. Is a player-made mute button a sensible safety valve, or does it turn shared game spaces into a collection of private bubbles?
Discuss: Should online games provide stronger built-in controls for blocking large influencer communities, or would that encourage players to solve social problems with ever-larger mute lists?
