Paris has overtaken London as Europe’s leading AI city in an analysis cited by AI Magazine, ranking fifth globally while London sits sixth. The result is less a victory lap than a tale of two ecosystems.

Why it matters

The analysis says London has more than 6,500 AI companies and leads Paris on commercial strength, innovation and implementation. Paris, meanwhile, benefits from stronger public investment and Mistral’s push for European open-weight and sovereign AI. The gap is narrow, and the ranking is an analysis rather than a new official economic measure. Still, it offers a useful snapshot of where money, talent, infrastructure and political ambition are pooling. Paris has the state-backed strategy; London has the busier commercial bazaar. Which one proves more durable may depend on who turns AI enthusiasm into profitable, useful systems first.

Discuss: Should Europe prioritise Paris-style public backing for sovereign AI, or London-style commercial density and private-sector growth?
