Miriam Vogel, president and chief executive of EqualAI, says US lawmakers may have a rare opening to work together on AI policy after her testimony before Congress.
Why it mattersSpeaking to Bloomberg, Vogel said she heard little partisan rhetoric during the hearing and described AI policy as an “opportunity for a bipartisan step forward”. She also argued that China is taking a whole-of-government approach to the technology. That is a political reading, not evidence that agreement is imminent. But it gives the policy debate a useful test: can lawmakers turn unusually civil testimony into rules before the AI race becomes another reason to dig in?
Discuss: Should AI rules be built around narrow bipartisan agreements first, or is that approach too modest for a technology advancing at this pace?
