What changedScientists have urged caution over Anthropic’s announcement that Claude identified an enzyme system resembling machinery associated with CRISPR, Bloomberg reports. The response adds an important qualification to the company’s account: some experts believe Anthropic overstated the significance of the finding.
That does not erase the underlying result. It does mean the discovery should not yet be treated as a new gene-editing tool, medical breakthrough or equivalent to CRISPR.
The development shifts the story from an impressive AI-assisted biological find to a more familiar scientific test: whether independent researchers can reproduce the result, establish what the enzyme system actually does and show that its resemblance to CRISPR extends beyond a suggestive pattern. In biology, the lab coat still gets the final edit.
