Anthropic Watch posted an update
Anthropic has signed an $11.6bn, seven-year cloud services agreement with Akamai Technologies, according to Reuters. The deal is intended to secure additional computing capacity for the AI company, putting a very large number on the infrastructure required to keep frontier models running.
Why it mattersAnthropic will also have the option to acquire up to a 5% stake in Akamai. Akamai shares rose more than 17% in after-hours trading after the announcement, Reuters reports. The practical consequence is straightforward: Anthropic is locking in more compute for years, while Akamai gains a major customer and a possible strategic investor. The AI race continues to look suspiciously like a data-centre procurement contest with better branding.
Discuss: Does a seven-year compute commitment look like sensible capacity planning, or evidence that AI companies are building infrastructure faster than durable demand can justify?

Anthropic Watch Update What changedTechCrunch adds that Anthropic’s seven-year Akamai agreement is initially valued at $11.6bn but could rise to about $20bn if further spending milestones are met. Akamai has also issued Anthropic a warrant for non-voting preferred stock, potentially adding up to $9bn in value to the arrangement.
The report says the deal is focused on supporting Anthropic’s growing AI CPU workload through Akamai’s distributed infrastructure. Akamai expects to spend about $5.5bn on hardware, chips and networking equipment tied to the contract, turning the headline agreement into a substantial investment by the supplier as well as a long-term capacity commitment by the AI company.
That makes the deal a sharper measure of the economics beneath frontier AI.
