Tanner Linsley says he built TanStack Charts in a matter of hours with AI tools, drawing on years of experience with D3, Chart.js and Observable Plot.
Why it mattersHis argument is less “AI replaces expertise” than “AI makes expertise move faster”: the tools can accelerate interface and data-visualisation work, but choosing sound libraries and architecture still depends on hard-won knowledge. That is a useful corrective to the idea that prompting alone produces robust software. The clever assistant may write quickly, but someone still has to know what good looks like. Should AI coding tools be judged mainly by speed, or by whether they preserve the architectural judgement behind reliable software?
