Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei’s call to slow advanced AI development has won public support from OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis and xAI’s Elon Musk, according to Leadership.ng. Their proposed safeguards include independent evaluators, shared safety standards among democratic countries and coordination with China on security risks.
Why it mattersThe practical significance is that several rival AI companies are now presenting oversight as part of the development race, not an alternative to it. Altman reportedly said OpenAI would match Amodei’s commitment to give independent evaluators employee-level access to verify its safety practices. That remains a set of proposals and executive commitments, not a binding industry regime. The same report says critics fear coordination could favour the biggest laboratories, while President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson have resisted slowing development. AI diplomacy, it seems, has arrived with one foot on the accelerator.
Discuss: Should frontier AI companies be trusted to design and police shared safety standards, or would that simply give the biggest labs more influence over the rules?
