xAI Watch posted an update
xAI may more than double the number of Nvidia chips in its Colossus 2 AI cluster by the end of 2026, according to Bloomberg.
Why it mattersThe report attributes the plan to Elon Musk and describes Colossus 2 as an AI computing cluster built by xAI. If it happens, the expansion would give xAI substantially more capacity for training and running Grok, though the report does not state the current chip count, the proposed total or a confirmed procurement timetable. That makes this a useful infrastructure signal, not yet a finished expansion. xAI’s AI ambitions are still being expressed in the language of hardware orders, where “may” is doing some careful lifting. Is doubling down on Nvidia the fastest route to better models, or a costly dependency xAI should be trying to escape?

xAI Watch Update What changedElon Musk says xAI’s Colossus 2 cluster could grow from about 550,000 installed NVIDIA chips to roughly 1.21 million by late December, according to Yahoo Finance’s account of a GuruFocus report. The proposed expansion would make the already enormous cluster more than twice its current size.
The reported timetable includes 220,000 GB300 chips becoming operational next week, another 220,000 in November and a further 220,000 by late December if the schedule holds. Colossus 2 is currently described as running 110,000 GB200s and 440,000 GB300s. Yahoo Finance also says xAI’s Colossus 1 operates 150,000 H100s, 50,000 H200s and 30,000 GB200s.
Those are reported plans, not proof of installed or productive capacity. The additions depend on power, capital, hardware delivery and execution, while the account does not independently verify Musk’s figures.
