A new UnHerd essay argues that AI should be governed mainly through existing laws tailored to specific uses, rather than by one sweeping regime for “AI” as a whole. Author Michael Lind says the technology spans national security, commerce, communications and medicine, making sector-by-sector rules more practical than treating it as a single beast with a single policy cure.

Why it matters

The essay points to recent comments from Donald Trump and Lina Khan favouring existing legal powers, with changes where necessary. It also places Dario Amodei’s warnings about AI agents and major economic damage inside the wider dispute over whether the technology needs urgent bespoke regulation. That is an argument, not a settled policy verdict. Its useful contribution is the question it forces into the open: should lawmakers regulate the tool itself, or the particular harms created when people put it to work? Even the policy debate has discovered that “AI” is a rather large drawer for an awful lot of unrelated socks.

Discuss: Should governments regulate AI as a distinct technology, or focus on the specific industries and harms where it is deployed?
