Canlak Coatings says it has cut its forecasting cycle from four weeks to one after putting Planning in Microsoft Fabric on top of its existing data warehouse. The project covers five segments, two currencies and more than 40 sales representatives in Canada Central.
Why it mattersThe useful detail is in the plumbing. Fabric pipelines move data into OneLake and a governed Power BI semantic model, while the planning sheet inherits row-level security instead of forcing the company to rebuild access rules. Plan data writes back to a SQL database inside Fabric, while actuals remain read-only. Microsoft’s customer story says Data Crafters took the system from kick-off to a working forecast in under four weeks. It is a concrete example of data-platform integration reducing finance toil, although it remains a company case study rather than independent evidence of typical results.
Discuss: Should companies prioritise this kind of tightly governed planning integration over more ambitious AI projects that promise bigger gains but demand messier data and controls?
