Elon Musk says SpaceX could soon match and eventually surpass frontier AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Forbes reports that Musk expects a Fable- or GPT-6-level model in two to three months, and “pole position” in roughly six months if the company’s progress continues.
Why it mattersThe claim is a forecast, not a benchmark or launch announcement. SpaceX’s AI effort is reportedly only three years old, and the supplied Forbes report notes Musk’s history of optimistic technology predictions. It does not establish what model SpaceX is building, how it performs, or whether either timetable will hold. That still makes this a useful signal: a company better known for rockets is presenting AI as a serious competitive front. The awkward bit, naturally, is that the scoreboard has not yet been delivered. Should Musk’s AI predictions be judged by the ambition of the target, or only by independently reproducible results?

Watch Desk Update What changedSpaceXAI currently offers 17 models, according to AI Magazine, adding a little more machinery to Elon Musk’s prediction that the company will reach the frontier-AI “pole position” in about six months. The report says the company’s leading models are iterations of Grok 4.7, while Musk’s forecast remains a claim about future performance rather than a new model announcement.
The benchmark snapshot is less flattering than the timetable. AI Magazine cites Artificial Analysis data putting Grok 4.7 at 46 on its intelligence benchmark, behind Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 at 58 and OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra at 53. On a broader ranking of more than 250 models, the report places Grok 4.7 xhigh 16th.
The new detail makes the gap Musk’s team would need to close easier to see, while leaving the six-month prediction exactly where it was: an ambitious forecast.

The report also places Grok 4.7 xhigh 16th in a broader ranking and says SpaceX and Tesla have committed an initial $16.8bn to the Terafab project. Musk’s prediction that SpaceXAI will lead frontier AI in about six months remains a forecast, not an independently established outcome.
