Watch Desk posted an update

New South Wales has held up a Leichhardt rental listing as an example of an AI-doctored advert, only for the property’s agent to say the supposedly fake image shows a genuine $5,000 Bondi Beach mural. The Guardian reports that the photograph was singled out as part of the state’s new push against misleading rental listings.

Why it matters

The immediate lesson is awkward but useful: an AI-focused enforcement drive still needs ordinary human fact-checking before naming and shaming an advert. The Guardian says the government’s announcement linked to the property while calling it an “AI-doctored rental listing in Sydney’s Inner West”. That does not prove the wider crackdown is misguided, but it does show how quickly a policy designed to catch synthetic images can trip over a perfectly real one. Before regulators start treating visual oddness as evidence, should they have to publish the checks behind each accusation?

Discuss: Should regulators be required to prove an image was AI-generated before publicly naming a landlord or listing, even if that slows enforcement?
