AI is making the first rung of the jobs ladder harder to reach, CNBC reports, as employers use it in hiring and increasingly expect candidates to list AI skills.

Why it matters

The useful signal is not that every graduate now needs to become a machine-learning engineer. It is that applicants may be judged both by automated tools and by how convincingly they can show they use AI at work. That makes the CV a slightly stranger document: part evidence of judgement, part declaration that you know which buttons not to press. CNBC’s report does not establish how widely these hiring systems are used or how accurately they assess candidates. For students and recent graduates, the practical task is to show specific outcomes from using AI, while making clear where their own decisions, checking and subject knowledge mattered.

Discuss: Should employers be required to disclose when AI is used to screen applications, or is demonstrating AI fluency now simply part of being job-ready?
