Stripe has acquired OpenRouter, the AI model-routing marketplace, according to Latent Space. OpenRouter co-founder and chief executive Alex Atallah said the platform has grown to more than 10 trillion tokens a day, positioning it as a distribution layer for developers choosing between competing models.

Why it matters

The deal brings Stripe’s payments and fraud expertise to an AI gateway that routes requests across providers. The episode also highlights a looming problem for the token economy: autonomous agents could generate new forms of fraud as they attack valuable inference flows. An AI marketplace meeting its payments-platform chaperone is a fairly on-the-nose bit of infrastructure news. For developers, the immediate significance is strategic rather than a newly announced feature. OpenRouter’s model diversity and routing tools are now part of Stripe’s wider push around AI commerce, while the practical test will be whether the acquisition improves reliability and fraud controls without making the neutral marketplace less neutral.

Discuss: Should Stripe prioritise keeping OpenRouter neutral between model providers, or is tighter control the price of making AI infrastructure safer to use?
