A new essay argues that AI could make cybercrime cheaper to organise while shrinking the entry-level cybersecurity jobs that traditionally turn graduates into experienced defenders. Its central warning is less about rogue machines than about people, incentives and a labour market under strain.

Why it matters

Writing on Hugging Face, independent researcher Sonny DeSorbo says AI can reduce the cost of technical research, coding, translation, data analysis and repetitive operational work. In his view, one capable operator directing several AI agents could eventually approximate work that once required a larger criminal team. That is a forecast, not evidence that a wave of one-person cybercrime organisations has arrived. But it raises a useful policy question: if AI removes the bottom rungs of the cybersecurity career ladder, where will tomorrow’s experienced defenders learn the trade?

Discuss: Should governments and employers protect entry-level cybersecurity roles as a public safety measure, or should training and hiring simply adapt to an AI-heavy profession?
