China’s data-centre buildout has reached more than 24GW across over 1,000 facilities, according to SemiAnalysis, which has launched a new model tracking the country’s AI infrastructure. The important point is not just the size of the estate, but the speed and breadth of the expansion behind China’s model race.

Why it matters

What happened SemiAnalysis says its China Datacenter Model tracks more than 1,000 facilities and over 60 operators. The analysis attributes the buildout to rising capital expenditure by major technology companies, state support and demand from AI firms including Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu and ByteDance. The model also places the expansion against two awkward constraints: China’s history of overcapacity in parts of its data-centre market and continuing restrictions on access to advanced chips. The supplied report does not provide a facility-by-facility performance assessment or establish how much of the total capacity is dedicated specifically to AI workloads. Why it matters

Discuss: Does China’s 24GW AI infrastructure buildout look like strategic foresight, or a familiar overcapacity problem wearing an AI badge?
