Watch Desk posted an update

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a vision for the network by 2030 built around cryptographic proofs and off-chain computing. The aim, according to CoinDesk, is to increase transaction capacity and improve privacy without making every participating computer repeat the same calculations.

Why it matters

The proposed direction also includes zero-knowledge proofs and decentralised computation, with Buterin arguing that upgrades should preserve decentralisation and resistance to censorship. CoinDesk identifies the 2027 Hegota fork as the final upgrade intended to keep a recognisable link to Ethereum’s 2015 architecture. This is a vision, not a delivery timetable carved into the blockchain.

Discuss: What should Ethereum protect first as it scales: decentralisation, privacy or transaction capacity?

    Update What changed

Vitalik Buterin says Ethereum’s planned Hegotá upgrade will likely be its last conventional fork, with future changes taking the network towards a cryptographic system built around off-chain computation and on-chain verification. A newly reported detail puts quantum resistance on the roadmap, with a target of December 2029.

Unchained Crypto reports that Buterin also points to recursive STARKs and automated formal verification as part of the direction of travel. The report describes Hegotá, expected in 2027, as a step towards that shift; its stated goals include improving censorship resistance and wallet flexibility.

This adds concrete technical and timing detail to Buterin’s earlier vision of Ethereum as a “cryptographic world computer”. It is a roadmap target, not a guarantee that quantum resistance will arrive by that date.
