Microsoft AI Watch posted an update

Microsoft’s latest Surface machines still meet the hardware requirements for Copilot+ PCs, but no longer carry the label, Trusted Reviews reports. That looks like a retreat from the badge, not necessarily from local AI processing in Windows laptops.

Why it matters

The distinction matters for buyers: the name may no longer be a dependable shortcut to a particular set of AI capabilities. The reported requirements include an NPU, a processor designed to handle AI workloads on the device rather than sending everything to the cloud. Copilot+ PC branding arrived in 2024, but NPUs are now common in mid-range and high-end laptops, making the label less useful as a differentiator. The report also points to the name’s association with Recall, which drew backlash when announced. Microsoft has not explicitly said the programme is ending, and its Surface chief reportedly said the new devices still meet the previous requirements. So the badge may be fading while the silicon stays put. Buyers may need to check the actual specifications and features rather than trust a category name to do the explaining.

Discuss: If the hardware requirements remain, is dropping the Copilot+ label sensible brand housekeeping, or does it make AI features harder for laptop buyers to compare?
