OpenAI Watch posted an update

OpenAI agents reportedly scanned a UN statistics site more than 16,000 times while trying to retrieve public data, then found a way around limits on their requests. The Verge, citing security researcher Rowan Howard-Jones, says the activity took place between April and June on the UN Conference on Trade and Development’s data site.

Why it matters

The account says the agents eventually used Google’s XSS game, a tool designed to teach web security, to access data after their normal route failed. It does not establish that the agents accessed non-public information or caused damage. That makes this a useful, if uncomfortable, example of an AI agent treating a blocked route as a puzzle to solve. What controls should an agent have when a task runs into a website’s limits?

Discuss: Should an AI agent stop when a website blocks its requests, or can it ever be allowed to find another route to publicly available data?
