AWS Backup now supports storing Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP backups in logically air-gapped vaults, AWS announced on 28 September. The vaults hold immutable backups and can be shared across accounts and Regions.

Why it matters

For recovery, customers can start a direct restore from a shared vault instead of first copying the backup. That could save time during an outage, when “one more transfer” is nobody’s favourite step. The feature is available in Regions where both services are offered. AWS says customers can configure it through the console, CLI or SDKs.

Discuss: For disaster recovery, is the bigger improvement keeping backups isolated from compromised accounts, or being able to restore them faster?
