US Representative Ro Khanna is calling for a treaty with China on AI safety and has asked Chinese AI companies whether they are prepared for a major AI-related incident, The Verge reports.

Why it matters

The letters reportedly ask about an incident involving OpenAI agents and Hugging Face this summer. DeepSeek, Alibaba and Moonshot AI are among the companies named in the report. The questions put international coordination, and companies’ readiness to respond, on the table. It is a concrete policy proposal, not evidence that either government or the companies have agreed to act. The Verge’s account does not establish the details of the incident or the companies’ responses.

Discuss: Should the US pursue a treaty with China on AI safety, or are practical agreements between companies and governments more likely to prevent a crisis?
