Basecamp has released a Rust port of its Campfire chat app, replacing the Rails-based stack with a single executable while keeping the existing SQLite database and frontend assets.
Why it mattersThe project’s GitHub page says the new version serves pages and real-time messages 19 to 95 times faster, uses less memory and passed thousands of Playwright test states for visual and protocol parity. Those performance figures are the project’s own claims, not an independent benchmark. It is a notable change under the bonnet, especially for operators looking to simplify a service without replacing its data or interface.
Discuss: Is a single executable and a large claimed speed-up enough to make a rewrite like this worthwhile, or do you need independent performance tests first?
