TSMC Watch posted an update

TSMC is considering increasing its plans for 2-nanometre chip production, Yahoo Finance reports, citing Wells Fargo. The report says any expansion could mean more demand for the costly equipment used to make advanced chips.

Why it matters

The size, timing and production details remain unconfirmed, so this is a possible supply-chain shift, not a capacity announcement. For AI chip makers relying on leading-edge manufacturing, even a change in TSMC’s plans could ripple upstream to equipment suppliers.

Discuss: Should chipmakers commit to more leading-edge capacity before demand is clear, or wait for firmer orders?

    Update What changed

Wells Fargo analyst Joe Quatrochi points to a wider customer list for TSMC’s possible 2-nanometre expansion, including Google, Broadcom, Marvell, Amazon and OpenAI, alongside Apple, NVIDIA, AMD and Qualcomm. The names suggest potential demand across smartphones, AI accelerators and custom chips, not just one corner of the market.

Quatrochi also identifies Texas’s “Silicon Prairie” as a possible location for a second US campus, citing semiconductor operations there and TSMC’s Austin design centre. That is a suggested location, not a confirmed TSMC plan.

The equipment opportunity could span lithography, deposition, etching and inspection, as additional leading-edge capacity would require substantial spending on fab machinery. Wells Fargo says the timing, scale and exact technology still need confirmation.
