AWS has added a full-size figure for RDS snapshots in the console and through the DescribeDBSnapshots API. The new FullSnapshotSizeInBytes field counts all blocks that make up a snapshot, including blocks referenced from earlier snapshots.
Why it mattersThat is different from the incremental size, which counts only newly changed blocks stored in that snapshot. AWS gives the example of a 100 GB database volume with 50 GB of data: its full snapshot size is 50 GB, whether it is the first snapshot or a later one. The figure is available through the console, CLI and SDKs in commercial AWS Regions. Less guesswork for anyone trying to understand what a snapshot represents, without confusing it with the latest increment.
Discuss: When planning storage costs, should cloud providers foreground the full size of a snapshot or the incremental storage it adds?
