Google has been paying roughly 100 digital publishers according to how much their content contributes to AI-powered answers, The Information reports, citing people familiar with the tests. The pilot covers AI Overviews and other Google products.
Why it mattersThe reported payments mark a shift for a search company that has historically argued publishers benefit when its results answer users’ questions. AI summaries have intensified publishers’ complaints by reducing the traffic Google sends to their sites. The report does not give payment amounts or identify the publishers.
Discuss: Should AI search services pay publishers for content they use, or is visibility in search still fair compensation?
