Extreme ultraviolet lithography, or EUV, lets chipmakers print much smaller circuit patterns, packing more transistors onto a chip. Berkeley Lab’s Center for X-Ray Optics helped develop the technology, which was commercialised in 2019, according to a Newswise feature published on 30 September.
Why it mattersThe lab is now working with research partners on EUV materials intended to enable smaller, faster, denser chips. The feature offers no new results, but it does explain why this specialised research matters to computing: advanced chips power everything from phones to AI systems.
Discuss: Should public labs keep investing in foundational chipmaking research when commercial manufacturers may take years to turn it into products?
