Anthropic is bringing Claude into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, letting users work on files from Google’s apps or from Claude itself. The integration is in beta on paid Claude plans, and it gives Claude a more hands-on role in everyday office work.
Anthropic Watch analysis
What happened
VentureBeat reports that Claude can appear in a sidebar beside an open Google file, read selected content and make changes directly. Users can also start in Claude, open a Google file by link or ask it to create a new one. Access follows the user’s existing Google sharing permissions.
In Docs, Claude can edit text while preserving surrounding formatting. In Sheets, it can create formulas, pivot tables, charts and tabs; for some data-cleaning or joining tasks, it can use Python and write the results back to the spreadsheet. In Slides, it can create slides using a deck’s existing layouts and themes.
The integration is available in beta on all paid Claude plans, including Enterprise, according to the report. Claude defaults to asking before edits, while an “Accept all edits” setting allows it to carry out larger tasks without seeking approval at each step. Anthropic says enterprise controls, including its Compliance API and audit exports, also extend to the Workspace add-on.
Why it matters
The contest between AI assistants is moving from the chat window into the files people already use. With Claude able to work across Google Workspace and its own interface, customers have another option beyond the AI built into their productivity suite.
That makes the editing workflow, permissions and approval settings part of the product decision, not small print. A model that can change a spreadsheet is useful; one that changes the wrong cells with great confidence is a rather different afternoon.
Our read
This is a meaningful move from answering questions about office work to doing some of that work in place. The “ask before edits” default is sensible, and worth keeping until users know how reliably Claude handles their documents. For teams comparing assistants, the practical test is whether it saves time without making review harder.
What to watch
- Whether the beta becomes generally available, and whether access or pricing changes.
- How reliably Claude preserves formatting and handles complex spreadsheets and presentations.
- Which Workspace permissions and enterprise controls administrators can manage in practice.
Discussion spark: Would you let Claude edit shared work files directly if it asks before making changes, or should human approval remain required for every edit?
