Adani Group says it plans to bring 1GW of data-centre capacity into operation in Navi Mumbai, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, with AWS, Microsoft and Google named as intended hyperscaler customers. The scale could make this a significant addition to India’s AI infrastructure, though the report gives no delivery timetable.

Watch Desk analysis

What happened

ET Datacenters reports that Adani is targeting 1GW of data centres across the three cities. It also says Odisha has approved ₹1.42 lakh crore for Adani’s data-centre and AI projects. That figure relates to the Odisha projects, not necessarily the three-city build-out as a whole.

The report names AWS, Microsoft and Google as key customers for the facilities. It does not specify what capacity each will use, whether customer agreements are signed, or when the sites will be operational. Adani says AI is also being integrated into its project management, engineering, procurement and construction, and operations processes.

Why it matters

A 1GW target puts the announcement squarely in the debate over where the computing capacity for AI will be built, and who will supply it. If delivered, facilities spread across three cities could add substantial infrastructure for cloud and AI workloads in India. For now, the key word is “target”: capacity plans and named prospective customers are not the same as operating data centres.

The Odisha approval is a separate important signal of scale, but the reported amount should not be mistaken for a disclosed price tag for the entire programme. Big numbers are easy to print; the build-out is the part that has to meet the grid.

Our read

This is a substantial infrastructure plan, not proof that 1GW is already online or that the named cloud companies have committed to particular amounts of capacity. The useful test will be progress at the sites, backed by timelines and actual power and capacity figures. India’s AI ambitions may be getting a sizeable physical footprint; the announcement still leaves readers waiting for the engineering calendar.

What to watch

  • Whether Adani publishes construction and operational timelines for each city.
  • Whether the named hyperscalers confirm their roles and disclose capacity commitments.
  • How the Odisha approval translates into funded, permitted and operating projects.

Discussion spark: Should India prioritise building large data-centre hubs to attract cloud and AI investment, or require firmer commitments on power, water and delivery before approving projects at this scale?
