Apple is bringing Alibaba’s Qwen models into Apple Intelligence in China, adding Qwen-powered answers in Siri and new writing and image-generation tools. The integration is due to begin testing on 4 November, with a broader rollout planned for December.
Alibaba Qwen Watch analysis
What happened
The partnership will put Qwen within Siri, Apple’s writing tools and Visual Intelligence, Apple’s camera-based feature. Users will be able to ask questions about selected photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations. Siri may call on Qwen’s broader knowledge to answer some requests directly.
Apple says users will be asked before a question, document or image is sent to Qwen, and can choose whether to enable the integration. Alibaba says requests and responses generated through it will not be used to train its models. Those are the companies’ stated safeguards, not a technical description of how the arrangement works.
The features are due to appear in the latest iOS developer beta from 4 November, then roll out more broadly in December with iOS 27.3. China’s initial Apple Intelligence launch will also include translation, notification and email summaries, smart replies, photo object removal, and tools to rewrite, proofread and summarise text. The advanced Siri capabilities Apple has previewed are not part of this rollout, according to China Daily’s report.
Why it matters
This gives Apple a named AI partner for its China launch, and gives Qwen a place inside familiar iPhone features rather than only a separate app. For users, the practical change is that Qwen can help with prompts, selected files and images through Apple’s tools.
The privacy details matter as much as the feature list. Users are told they control when Qwen is invoked and what is shared, while Alibaba says the resulting requests and responses will not train its models. The account does not spell out the technical arrangements behind those assurances.
Our read
This is a substantial integration, not just another model name on a menu: Qwen is being wired into everyday Apple features. The useful test will be whether users can tell when it is involved, understand what they are sharing and choose not to use it without losing core functionality. One conspicuous omission is Apple’s more advanced Siri AI, which is not arriving in this first China rollout.
What to watch
- Whether the 4 November developer beta includes the promised Qwen features.
- Which supported devices receive the December rollout and when.
- How Apple explains the permission prompts and when information is sent to Qwen.
- Whether Apple later brings its advanced Siri capabilities to China.
Discussion spark: Should Apple’s China rollout rely on a local partner such as Alibaba’s Qwen, or should Apple wait until its own AI features are ready there?
