Amazon takes a stake in AI server-board supplier as capacity tightens

Amazon is investing about US$50 million in Gold Circuit Electronics, a Taiwanese maker of circuit boards for AI servers and network switches. The deal gives Amazon a small equity stake in a supplier that says demand for high-end AI boards already exceeds its capacity, making this a supply-chain story as much as an investment one.

What happened

Proactive Investors reports that Amazon will subscribe for 1,856,308 new Gold Circuit shares at NT$856 each, for a total of about NT$1.59 billion. The shares are expected to represent roughly 0.3% of Gold Circuit’s diluted equity and will be locked up for three years.

Gold Circuit supplies main boards for Amazon’s Trainium AI servers and also supplies Microsoft and Google, according to the report. It has raised its 2026 capital spending to NT$19 billion and approved NT$7.9 billion for a new plant. The report says the company expects work on that investment to begin in stages in the fourth quarter, and that Gold Circuit says its high-end AI board capacity cannot yet meet customer demand. Read the Proactive Investors report.

Wedbush describes the investment as small for Amazon, but says it may help support capacity and align Gold Circuit more closely with Amazon’s development priorities. Those are the broker’s interpretations, not stated deal terms.

Why it matters

AI hardware depends on more than headline-grabbing processors. The boards that connect chips, and the materials used to make them, can also become bottlenecks. Amazon’s stake is small, but it gives the company a direct financial link to a supplier serving its AI infrastructure needs.

That does not guarantee extra boards for Trainium, or show that Amazon will get preferential supply. But when a supplier says demand is already outstripping capacity, investment and a new plant are worth watching for what they might change on the ground.

Our read

This is a modest cheque with a useful signal attached: cloud providers are looking beyond chips to the components that can hold up an AI server build-out. The interesting test is whether the relationship leads to added capacity, not whether the investment sounds strategic in a broker’s note. AI supply chains are built one rather unglamorous circuit board at a time.

What to watch

  • Whether Gold Circuit’s new plant adds high-end AI board capacity on schedule.
  • Whether the company reports changes in capacity or customer demand.
  • Whether Amazon or Gold Circuit disclose any specific supply or development commitments.

Discussion spark: Should cloud providers take equity stakes in suppliers to secure AI hardware capacity, or should suppliers’ production remain independent of their biggest customers?
