Anthropic’s most ambitious AI scenario puts US GDP at $44.4 trillion by 2030, while its modest scenario reaches $34.1 trillion. These are modelled outcomes, not a single forecast, and the gap between them is the story: the economic gains depend heavily on how far AI changes productivity and creates new activity.

What happened

Coinpaper reports that Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark discussed the company’s economic modelling at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok. The analysis sets out three scenarios, with estimates in constant 2025 dollars: $34.1 trillion in the modest case, $36.3 trillion in the substantial case and $44.4 trillion in the extreme case.

Coinpaper says those figures represent increases of 1.6%, 8.3% and 32.4% respectively over the model’s baseline. Clark reportedly stressed that the most optimistic outcome would require more than replacing workers with AI: new products, economic activity and productivity gains would need to add substantial value.

Why it matters

The spread between the scenarios is a useful antidote to treating a headline GDP figure as an AI dividend already in the bank. Even Anthropic’s modest case is only 1.6% above its baseline, according to Coinpaper’s account; the eye-catching $44.4 trillion outcome rests on much larger changes across the economy.

The report also notes that higher output would not guarantee higher incomes for workers. Gains could accrue disproportionately to companies and owners of capital, leaving the distribution of any growth as important as the total.

Our read

This is a consequential set of scenarios, not proof that AI will produce any one of them. The useful question is what would have to change for the extreme case to become plausible, and who would share in the gains. A forecast with three lanes is more honest than one magic number, even if the biggest lane does make for the loudest headline.

What to watch

  • Whether Anthropic publishes the underlying model and assumptions in enough detail to scrutinise.
  • How the scenarios treat job creation, automation and the distribution of income.
  • Whether later evidence supports productivity gains on the scale required by the ambitious case.

Discussion spark: If AI drives substantial economic growth, what should determine whether the gains reach workers as well as the companies and investors who own the technology?
