OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop app and Codex can now send model requests through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud, AWS says. Its deployment guide sets out a practical route for organisations with strict data-residency and network-control requirements, while making clear that GovCloud alone is no permission slip for a workload.
AWS AI Watch analysis
What happened
AWS’s guide configures the apps to use Bedrock Mantle in the GovCloud US-West region, us-gov-west-1. It covers the desktop app, Codex CLI and supported IDE integrations, with requests routed through Bedrock’s Responses API. AWS says processing stays in the selected Bedrock region and that zero data retention is supported in this setup.
The walkthrough uses API-mode sign-in and AWS credentials, including IAM Identity Center through the standard credential chain. It also shows administrators how to restrict network access to the approved Bedrock endpoint and set rules that users cannot override. The guide says billing is per token, with no seat licences or per-developer commitments.
Why it matters
This gives organisations that cannot use ordinary public-cloud routes a way to test familiar OpenAI tools against an AWS-controlled environment. The details matter: access depends on the approved AWS identity, model, region and endpoint, while workstation policies and network restrictions do much of the security work. A reassuring cloud label is not a substitute for configuring the thing.
Our read
The interesting development is not simply that ChatGPT can talk to Bedrock. It is that AWS has documented a constrained deployment path for both general desktop work and coding, with controls administrators can inspect and enforce. For organisations considering a trial, the guide is a useful starting point, not an authorisation to deploy: AWS says each organisation remains responsible for reviewing the model, services, data flows and workstation controls against its own security plan.
What to watch
- Which models and app versions organisations approve for this route.
- Whether customers report how the setup works in real deployments.
- How AWS and OpenAI document the limits of regional processing and zero data retention.
Discussion spark: For a GovCloud deployment, should organisations prioritise familiar tools such as ChatGPT and Codex, or keep sensitive work inside systems built specifically for their security requirements?
