AWS lets AI agents run Step Functions workflows as tools

AWS is making Step Functions workflows available as tools for AI agents through Bedrock AgentCore Gateway. The useful distinction: an agent can choose when to start a process, but the steps themselves still run as the workflow was defined.

What happened

AWS says agents can use existing Standard and Express workflows, start them with inputs and look up workflow runs. Its example is a customer-support agent starting a refund process, with the eligibility check, manager approval and credit handled in sequence by Step Functions.

An operations agent could also look up failed runs and tell an on-call engineer where a process broke. The feature is available in AWS Regions where Bedrock AgentCore Gateway is available, at standard rates for Step Functions and AgentCore Gateway. AWS has published a Step Functions guide to the integration.

Why it matters

This gives agents a route into repeatable business processes without asking a model to improvise every operational step. Teams can define the workflow, then let an agent decide when to use it and what input to pass. That is a more practical division of labour than handing an agent a vague brief and hoping it develops a taste for paperwork.

It also gives operators a way to ask about workflow runs in plain language, rather than starting every investigation with a manual hunt through execution history.

Our read

The appealing bit is not that an agent can start a refund. It is that the refund still follows a process the business has already defined. That makes this worth a look for teams already using Step Functions, though the real test will be how carefully they control which workflows an agent can invoke and with what inputs.

What to watch

  • Which workflow operations AWS supports through the Gateway connector.
  • How teams restrict the workflows and inputs available to agents.
  • Whether the natural-language lookup meaningfully speeds up investigations of failed runs. Activity teaser AWS has made Step Functions workflows available as tools for AI agents through Bedrock AgentCore Gateway. An agent can choose when to start a workflow, while Step Functions runs its predefined steps, such as eligibility checks and approvals in a refund process. That separation could make agents more useful in routine business operations without asking them to invent the process as they go. We look at what the integration lets teams do, where it is available and what to watch before handing an agent the keys to a workflow.

Discussion spark: Should companies let AI agents start business workflows once the steps are fixed, or should a person still approve every run?
