AWS makes Web Answer generally available for cited answers in AI agents

AWS has made Web Answer generally available in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, giving AI agents a managed tool that searches the web and returns a synthesised answer with citations in a single call. For developers, the practical change is less retrieval plumbing to build and maintain, with each grounded claim linked to a source URL.

What happened

Web Answer plans searches, runs several in parallel, reads pages to check facts and searches again if the evidence is insufficient. It returns the answer and citations to an agent through AgentCore Gateway as an MCP tool result. AWS says it runs new searches for each question using current sources.

AWS distinguishes this from its Web Search tools, which return ranked links and snippets for a developer’s own model to process. Web Answer handles retrieval, synthesis and attribution; Web Search leaves the synthesis under the developer’s control. The service is billable, and the announcement’s setup example uses a gateway in the US East (N. Virginia) region.

Why it matters

Building search, retrieval, synthesis and citation handling separately gives teams more control, but also more components to maintain and more places for citations to drift away from claims. Web Answer bundles those steps into a managed tool. That could make current, source-linked answers easier to add to an agent, though a citation is a route to evidence, not a guarantee that the answer has interpreted it correctly.

AWS says administrators can set domain filters, while agents can narrow those limits but cannot widen them. The service also supports gateway authentication, VPC endpoints and CloudWatch metrics. Those controls make the launch relevant to teams building agents around current information, not just to anyone who fancies giving a chatbot a search box.

Our read

This is a useful infrastructure release: AWS is offering the finished answer-and-citation step, rather than only handing developers a list of links and wishing them well. Teams that want control over how evidence is interpreted may still prefer Web Search and their own synthesis. If you try Web Answer, test the citations against the answer before trusting the polished result. Neat plumbing is still plumbing.

What to watch

  • Whether Web Answer becomes available in more AWS regions.
  • How its answers and citations perform on real, difficult questions.
  • Whether teams prefer the managed synthesis or the control offered by Web Search.

Discussion spark: For an AI agent answering factual questions, would you choose a managed tool that returns cited answers, or keep retrieval and synthesis separate for more control?
