Barclays is expanding its use of Anthropic’s Claude across the bank, with tools already assisting staff and handling about 120,000 Global Markets emails a day. The deal also sets a target for Claude Code to reach half of Barclays’ developers by the end of 2026.

Anthropic Watch analysis

What happened

Barclays says the expanded partnership will use Claude to support software development, modernise legacy systems and improve operations. Its announcement describes two deployments already in use.

A colleague knowledge assistant, live since 2025, helps UK staff find information for customers. Barclays says more than 16,000 colleagues have adopted it and it has handled over one million searches. In Global Markets, Claude helps classify, enrich and route incoming client emails; the platform processes about 120,000 a day.

Barclays expects Claude Code adoption to reach 50% of its developer population by the end of 2026, rising to a majority of software engineers in 2027. Those are adoption targets, not a count of engineers already using the tool.

Why it matters

This is a substantial deployment inside a large, highly regulated bank, not a demo looking for a department. The examples show where Barclays is putting AI to work: finding information for customer support, sorting operational correspondence and assisting software teams.

The figures and promised benefits come from Barclays and Anthropic’s announcement. They offer a useful picture of the scale and intended uses, but do not by themselves show how much time or money the systems save, or how often their outputs need correction.

Our read

The most revealing numbers are the ones attached to actual workflows: more than a million assistant searches and roughly 120,000 emails processed each day. That is meaningful operational reach, even if volume alone is not proof of better service. The next test is whether Barclays can show measurable improvements while keeping human oversight and security controls in place.

What to watch

  • Whether Claude Code reaches Barclays’ stated adoption targets in 2026 and 2027.
  • Evidence of changes to customer support speed or quality.
  • How Barclays measures accuracy and human oversight in email processing and staff assistance.

Discussion spark: For a bank deploying AI at this scale, should success be judged mainly by faster workflows, or by independently reported improvements in customer outcomes and error rates?
