ByteDance has merged its AI short-drama platform Skylark into Jimeng, while keeping Skylark available as a separate product entry, 36Kr reports. The move brings Skylark’s short-drama capabilities into Jimeng as ByteDance reassesses how its AI applications earn their keep.

ByteDance AI Watch analysis

What happened

The report says Skylark’s product team remains unchanged and that Chen Xinran, Jimeng’s head of operations and marketing, will oversee Skylark. It also says Jimeng has shifted its focus towards professional creators, with investment in its app reduced before China’s National Day and resources being concentrated on its web product.

The reporting, published by 36Kr on 24 October, cites people familiar with the changes and a former Jianying employee. That former employee said user growth at AI-native products such as Jimeng and Skylark had not translated into returns matching their investment. A Volcano Engine employee told the outlet that competition among ByteDance products to launch Seedance models has intensified, while the company’s model-as-a-service business is bringing in more revenue from Seedance than products such as Jimeng and Skylark.

Why it matters

The reported merger is more than a tidy-up between two video apps. It points to ByteDance weighing the value of its own AI applications against the money and reach its models can generate through external services. If users can access similar capabilities in multiple products, each app needs a clearer reason to exist beyond being another doorway to the same model.

For creators, the immediate reported change is that Jimeng has gained Skylark’s short-drama capabilities, while Skylark keeps its separate entry. The report does not describe a shutdown or give a timetable for further integrations.

Our read

This looks like consolidation with a strategy question attached: does ByteDance get more from focused creator tools, or from letting Seedance power a wider market of apps? Keeping Skylark accessible while combining capabilities gives the company room to test that answer, rather than pulling the plug in one theatrical flourish. The 36Kr report has the fuller account.

What to watch

  • Whether ByteDance merges other AI products, as people familiar with the company’s discussions told 36Kr it is considering.
  • Whether Jimeng’s web focus and move towards professional creators brings stronger commercial returns.
  • Whether Skylark retains a distinct role after its capabilities are integrated.

Discussion spark: Should ByteDance keep AI video tools as separate products for different audiences, or concentrate them around a smaller number of stronger apps?
