OpenAI has switched on automatic creative changes by default for new and existing ChatGPT Ads campaigns. The system can alter ad copy and destination pages without an advertiser approving each version, making this a meaningful change to how campaigns are controlled and tracked.

OpenAI Watch analysis

What happened

Search Engine Journal says the change took effect on 30 October, according to OpenAI’s help page. With creative enhancements enabled, the system can rewrite or create headlines and descriptions, translate ad text, resize images and select a different page on the advertiser’s site as the destination. It may prepare versions in advance or generate them during a conversation.

Advertisers can turn the setting off in Ads Manager at account or campaign level. The report says campaign-level settings take precedence, and existing opt-outs remain in place. The system uses the conversation or user interests alongside the ad and landing page to produce variations.

Why it matters

An ad may no longer be the exact copy or destination its creator submitted, and advertisers may not see every version before it runs. That puts freshness and accuracy of landing-page information firmly back on the advertiser’s checklist.

There is also a practical measurement question. OpenAI’s guidance, as described by Search Engine Journal, does not explain how tracking parameters behave when the system changes a destination URL, or whether advertisers can exclude particular pages. That is the sort of small-print gap that can make a campaign dashboard look confident while the click takes a scenic route.

Our read

Automatic variations could help ads fit the conversation around them, but default-on changes to copy and destinations deserve clear controls and reporting. If you manage a campaign, check the setting in Ads Manager and confirm that your tracking and landing pages still work as intended. You can opt out now and revisit the feature later.

What to watch

  • Whether OpenAI adds controls for individual changes, such as text, images or destination URLs.
  • Whether advertisers can see each version that ran and how it performed.
  • How tracking parameters behave when an ad’s destination changes.

Discussion spark: Should ad platforms be allowed to rewrite copy and change landing pages by default, or should every variation require advertiser approval?
