Anthropic’s Claude Code 2.1.311 fixes problems ranging from stalled file edits to agents losing access to their worktrees, while adding a handful of practical improvements. For developers using Claude Code, this is a substantial reliability release: less time waiting on stuck tools, and fewer ways for a busy session to trip over its own housekeeping.

Anthropic Watch analysis

What happened

The release notes list fixes across Claude Code, its cloud sessions and editor integrations. Among the more consequential changes, Claude Code now compacts and continues when a standard-context session exceeds 200,000 tokens, rather than stopping with a usage-credits error. It also fixes cases where interrupting Claude was delayed, edits stalled after running, or a background agent’s worktree was removed while another agent was still using it.

Anthropic also says the release improves startup time for Pro and Max accounts on launches within an hour of the last check, and makes shell commands that time out show their output so far while continuing in the background. The update was published on Anthropic’s Claude Code releases page on 26 October.

Our top picks

  • Long sessions can recover
When a standard-context session runs beyond 200,000 tokens, Claude Code now compacts the conversation and continues.
  • Interrupts should interrupt
The release fixes delays when stopping Claude while an MCP server is waiting on a resource read or a skill is downloading.
  • Edits are less likely to hang
Write and Edit no longer stall for up to five seconds after changing thousands of lines, according to the release notes.
  • Agents keep their workspace
A subagent’s isolated worktree is no longer removed while a background subagent it launched is still working in it.
  • Retries respect the API
Claude Code now fixes a problem where it retried requests the API had marked as non-retryable, potentially holding up a turn.
  • Timed-out commands leave a useful trail
Shell commands that reach their timeout now show output produced so far and indicate that the command is still running in the background.
  • Slack messages get a little more context
Before posting to an unnamed channel, Claude checks the channel topic for posting rules.

Why it matters

Claude Code is often asked to manage several moving parts at once: tools, files, background agents and long conversations. A release that fixes failures in those seams can matter more to daily work than a shiny new feature. The improvements to long-session recovery and agent workspaces are particularly useful for people running substantial tasks rather than one neat prompt at a time.

The notes describe changes, not independent performance tests, so the practical question is whether these fixes hold up in real projects. Still, the list targets concrete sources of friction, not merely a new coat of paint for the release page.

Our read

This is a worthwhile maintenance release with a few genuinely useful quality-of-life improvements. If Claude Code is part of your workflow, the fixes for long sessions, stuck edits and background agents are good reasons to update; teams should still test the changes against their own tool setups before assuming every edge case has vanished.

What to watch

  • Whether users see fewer stalls during large edits and long-running sessions.
  • Whether background agents reliably retain their worktrees and resume as expected.
  • Whether the improved timeout and retry behaviour makes failures easier to diagnose.

Discussion spark: Which matters more in an AI coding assistant: recovering gracefully from long sessions, or making its agents and tools more dependable?
