Claude Code 2.1.312 adds an identity-mapping option and fixes a range of problems across its editor, cloud and agent tools. The practical highlights include better protection against overwriting large instruction files and clearer controls for automated hooks.

What happened
Anthropic’s release notes, published on 27 October, describe changes across Claude Code, VS Code, cloud sessions, Claude Tag and Code Review. Here are six useful changes from the update:
Our top picks
- Map users through another identity claim
The Claude apps gateway can use an idtoken claim such as Microsoft Entra ID’s oid, rather than relying on sub. - Large instruction files get a safer edit path
Write now asks Claude to read a very large CLAUDE.md or rules file in full, or edit it in place, rather than overwrite it after seeing only the start. - Limit hooks running at once
Prompt and agent hooks now run at most 24 at a time per session, with a separate limit for hooks waiting beyond their timeout. - Stop sending a safety event
Claude Code no longer sends the claudecode.safetyevent OpenTelemetry event. - Make cloud setup scripts easier to work with
Cloud environment settings now provide a coloured Bash editor with line numbers and a Copy button. - Review the current pull request commit
Code Review now checks the pull request’s current commit when GitHub delivers a push event late.
Why it matters
This is a wide-ranging maintenance update, but some changes affect more than convenience. Teams using large project instructions get a fix for a potentially destructive edit failure; administrators gain a way to map identities to claims beyond the default. The hook limits also put concrete bounds on concurrent activity within a session.
The OpenTelemetry change is worth noting for teams that monitor Claude Code: Anthropic says the safety event is no longer sent. Check whether that affects any dashboards or processes that depend on it.
Our read
The best changes here are the unglamorous ones that stop tools doing the wrong thing: preserve a large rules file, review the current commit, and make hook activity more bounded. If Claude Code is in your workflow, the identity, telemetry and hook changes deserve a look alongside the bug fixes. The release notes describe the changes; how they behave in your own setup is the useful test.
What to watch
- Whether the large-file editing fix prevents unwanted rewrites in real projects.
- How teams adapt to the OpenTelemetry event change.
- Whether the hook limits affect workflows that run many agents at once.
Discussion spark: Should AI coding tools make telemetry changes like stopping a safety event opt-out choices, or should the default be to send less?
