A $129 million loan will finance the NVIDIA GPU cluster being built for Cohere’s Canadian sovereign AI contract. The deal gives the project a fixed 9% interest rate over three years, while leaving the GPUs as security for the debt.

What happened
HIVE Digital Technologies said its subsidiary BUZZ Alpha Cloud has signed a loan agreement with an institutional lender to finance the cluster. Unite.AI reports that the loan will fund part of a $165 million purchase of 2,303 NVIDIA GB200 GPUs and related infrastructure. Delivery is expected towards the end of the fourth quarter of 2026.
The cluster is intended for a three-year contract with Cohere, delivered through Bell AI Fabric. HIVE puts the contract’s total value at $225 million, including connectivity and storage. The company says the loan is secured by the GPUs and related assets, and that contract revenue is intended to repay it. The loan does not involve issuing common shares.
Why it matters
This financing turns a large AI infrastructure commitment into a more concrete project: debt is tied to the equipment and a named customer contract, rather than to a general promise of future demand. For Cohere, the cluster is intended to provide substantial computing capacity in Canada for its enterprise AI and foundation models.
The figures describe a planned deployment, not proof that the systems are already operating or that the contract will deliver its full stated value. The distinction between a funded build and live capacity is worth keeping; AI infrastructure announcements have a habit of arriving before the GPUs do.
Our read
The useful signal is the combination of a fixed-rate loan, specified hardware and a three-year customer contract. It makes the project’s financing structure easier to understand, even if the full cost of the borrowing and the deployment’s eventual performance remain unknown. The next milestone is not another impressive total: it is the cluster arriving and going into service.
What to watch
- Whether delivery takes place towards the end of Q4 2026, as HIVE expects.
- When the cluster becomes operational for Cohere through Bell AI Fabric.
- Whether HIVE discloses further financing costs or updates the contract’s value.
Discussion spark: For sovereign AI compute, should customers favour infrastructure financed against long-term contracts, or avoid tying capacity so closely to one provider’s debt and hardware?
